Manistee

Rich in history, logging, agriculture and the railroad were key elements in developing Manistee, and the county as a whole. In 1852 the population of Manistee County was only about 200 people. As logging increases and more and more mills were built, additional workers were needed and population rapidly increased. During this 1880's lumber boom, Manistee had more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the United States. The elegant mansions and ornate Victorian architecture are a reflection of that flourishing economy.

Today, Manistee is a four seasons community--with incredible natural resources, dining, golf, shopping and industry, fishing, hunting and outdoor recreation. It has been recognized by Midwest Living Magazine as one of 10 Michigan Small Towns in the top 100 Small Town Getaways for 2008. Known as the Victorian Port City, you can enjoy art and culture, wind your way down the river channel on the riverwalk, and picnic any one of a dozen parks or beaches. There's always something to do in Manistee! Take home a memory today.

Manistee is located between Manistee Lake and the shores of Lake Michigan, on US 31.
