Onekama

In 1845, Adam Stronach built a lumber mill on the channel between Lake Michigan and Portage Lake. Onekama - the Indian name for Portage- was settled and soon had two major railroads; the Manistee and the Northwestern. Onekama reached village status in 1891. A premier vacation spot since the early 1900's, Chicagoans made this trip by steamboat summer after summer. The steamboats are gone, but the summer vacation tradition lives on in this tranquil "two lake" town.

Today, the village consists of many prospering businesses including restaurants, lodging facilities, unique specialty and retail stores, golf and marinas. Victorian style cottages offer a glimpse back in time to when this resort town was first developed. Springtime brings orchard blossoms, bubbling artisan wells and flower lined streets. Summertime offers great outdoor recreation with charter boat fishing, boating, swimming, windsurfing, and sunbathing. The fall season offers hunting, hiking and biking and when winter arrives the outdoor fun keeps going with ice fishing on Portage Lake, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skiing. From glistening Portage Lake to sparkling Lake Michigan, come; fill your days with cool breezes, incredible sunsets and numerous recreational opportunities. Come enjoy all that Onekama has to offer.

Onekama is located on the shores of beautiful Portage Lake on Scenic Drive M-22.
